In total, Lenovo says that more than two dozen ThinkPad models are vulnerable, along with five ThinkStation Models and eight ThinkCentre models.

Lenovo says Fingerprint Manager Pro was used with the Thinkpad, ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation machines running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. The tool could be configured to store and authenticate website credentials via fingerprint.

Unfortunately, Lenovo says, it was also improperly protecting those stored credentials, leaving the readers far less secure than they should be. Now, the PC slinger is advising users still running the Fingerprint Manager Pro software to install the latest update (version 8.01.87) to address the issue.

Because the Fingerprint Manager Pro software does not need to run on Windows 10 (Microsoft added native fingerprint reader support with that build), newer and updated machines are not considered vulnerable.

Earlier this month, Lenovo moved to put to bed another headache from its past when it agreed to a settlement deal with the FTC that will end the case over its use of intrusive adware in its pre-bundled software on PCs back in 2014.®

4 Fixes for Lenovo Fingerprint Reader Not Working

Here’re 4 fixes that have helped other users resolve the Lenovo Fingerprint Reader Not Working Windows 10 problem. Just work your way down the list until you find the fix that does the trick.

Fix 1: Check the fingerprint scanner

Before addressing the fingerprint reader not working problem, you might want to check the fingerprint scanner for possible hardware issues.

  1. Check if there’s any grease or dust on the scanner. If yes, then gently wipe it off with a piece of clean cloth.
  2. Check if there’re any scratches on the sensor. If it’s been badly scratched, then send it to a trustworthy computer repair shop or the computer vendor for repair. If the sensor is in good condition but the fingerprint reader doesn’t work, please move on to Fix 2, below.

Fix 2: Update your fingerprint reader driver

This problem may occur if you are using the wrong fingerprint reader driver or it’s out of date. So you should update your fingerprint reader driver to see if it fixes your problem. If you don’t have the time, patience or skills to update the driver manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.
